What Is Parquet?

It is a wooden floor or flooring with a top or wear layer at least 2.5mm thick before installation.

This is set out in European Standard EN 13756, which specifies that below this thickness it would not be parquet but wood covering.

Likewise, synthetic laminate flooring cannot be considered parquet and is governed by standard UNE-EN 13329 for laminate floor coverings.

Floating Parquet Installation in Malaga

Floating parquet gets its name because it does not use any kind of fixing, such as nails or glue, to hold it in place.

This gives us a clean and very quick installation, with no need to move the furniture out or leave the house because of varnish fumes or smells.

There are several types of floating parquet, depending on the number of strips and their type:

  • 1 strip
  • 2 strips
  • 3 strips
  • Geometric and linear

They generally consist of a hardwood surface of approx. 3mm (the wear layer) and a pine cross-layer that acts as a stabiliser against expansion.

The bottom veneer is the base that holds the pine cross-layer. The 3mm mentioned above, which forms the hardwood layer, allows for a maximum of 3 sandings, although this varies significantly depending on the wear layer and the type of sanding carried out.

As a rule, there is no need to remove the existing floor, as ceramic tiles, cork or carpet make a perfectly good base for installing parquet.
