Solid wood parquet: what it is and why it lasts a lifetime

Solid wood parquet is made from strips of natural wood in a single piece, with no layers or backing. It is glued or nailed to the floor and, once laid, sanded and varnished or oiled on site. Because the whole strip is hardwood, it can be sanded and varnished several times over the years: that is why it is the longest-lasting floor there is.

The most common woods are oak, jatoba, iroko and walnut, and it can be laid in patterns that floating parquet does not allow:

  • Herringbone and chevron (Hungarian point).
  • Chequerboard, mosaic and geometric patterns.
  • Straight strip, English-style or staggered joints.

When it is worth it

  • Your own home, when you want a floor for decades that can be renewed by sanding.
  • Herringbone or mosaic patterns, which can only be achieved with solid strips.
  • Refurbishing old houses and grand period flats in the centre of Malaga.
  • We do not recommend it for bathrooms, kitchens heavily exposed to water or damp basements: there, vinyl flooring is a better choice.

Solid wood parquet prices in Malaga: what they depend on

We do not work with fixed rates: we adjust the price to each project according to the square metres, the manufacturer and the chosen model. After a free visit and measurement, we give you a fixed, itemised quote. This is what has the most influence:

  • Wood species and grade (selection, knots, colour).
  • Laying pattern: herringbone and mosaics take more labour than straight strips.
  • Condition of the subfloor: whether the screed needs levelling or an old floor has to be removed.
  • Finish: water-based varnish, natural oil or heavy-traffic varnish.
  • Skirting boards and trims at doors and stairs.

How we install solid wood parquet, step by step

  1. Visit, moisture check and measuring. We measure the area and check the moisture and flatness of the subfloor, which is key with solid wood.
  2. Choosing the wood and pattern. We show you samples of species, shades and laying patterns, and agree the quote.
  3. Acclimatisation and preparation. We leave the wood to acclimatise in the property and prepare the subfloor (levelling, primer).
  4. Laying. We glue or nail the strips in the chosen pattern.
  5. Sanding and finishing. We sand the whole floor and apply several coats of varnish or oil. We fit the skirting boards.

Timescales: laying, sanding and varnishing are all done on site, and after varnishing you need to wait 24–48 hours before walking on the floor. The number of working days and the acclimatisation time for the wood are set out in writing in the quote.

Solid wood parquet: frequently asked questions

How much does solid wood parquet cost per m² in Malaga?

It depends on the wood species, the laying pattern (straight strip, herringbone, mosaic), the condition of the subfloor and the finish; the price includes laying, sanding and varnishing. We price each project individually and give you a fixed, no-obligation quote after the visit.

What is the difference between solid parquet and floating parquet?

Solid parquet is wood in a single piece, glued or nailed down, and it can be sanded many times. Floating parquet has a hardwood top layer on a backing, is laid without glue and is quicker to install, but it can be sanded fewer times.

Can solid parquet be laid over underfloor heating?

It is possible with certain stable species and formats and with strict control of moisture and temperature, but it is not always the best option. We assess it during the visit.

How often does parquet need sanding?

It depends on use: in a normal home, when the varnish has worn through in the walkways, which is usually every good number of years. Solid parquet can be sanded several times.

How long does it take to install solid parquet?

It depends on the area and the laying pattern. After varnishing you need to wait 24–48 hours before walking on it. The exact timescale is set out in writing in the quote.
