Short answer: the floors that best hide dirt are mid-toned (natural oak, honey, mid greys and beiges), with a matt finish and a visible grain or pattern. Very dark floors seem practical, but they instantly show dust, footprints, hair and scratches; very light ones show stains and mud.
What makes a floor look dirty
A floor "looks dirty" when the dirt contrasts with it. Most of what ends up on the floor is light or mid-toned dust, sand and hair, so:
- On a very dark floor, dust and sand show up as a light layer, as do footprints and scratches.
- On a very light floor, dark stains show: mud, coffee, rubber marks.
- On a mid-toned floor, neither stands out as much.
As well as colour, sheen and pattern play a part: a gloss finish reflects light and shows every footprint; a visible grain or brushed texture "breaks up" the surface and camouflages whatever lands on it.

Which materials hide dirt best
Laminate flooring
Mid-toned laminates with texture synchronised to the grain are among the best at camouflaging dust, and their top layer is good at resisting stains. Choose a matt finish. More colour ideas in which laminate flooring colour to choose.
Vinyl flooring
Vinyl with a wood or stone pattern and texture hides dirt well and is easy to clean, in kitchens and bathrooms too.
Parquet and wooden floorboards
Natural wood with visible grain, in mid tones and a matt or oiled finish, hides everyday wear very well. Small scratches are less noticeable than on a glossy varnish. See the best parquet colours.
Tiles and porcelain
With tiles, what looks dirtiest is the grout. Grey grout, or grout in the same tone as the tile, hides far more than white grout.
If you have dogs or cats
Hair is less noticeable on a floor in a similar tone to your pet's coat. You'll also want a floor that resists scratches and water. We explain this in the best flooring for a home with dogs.
How to keep it clean for longer
- Put a doormat at every entrance, including the one from the terrace or garden: sand is what dirties and scratches the most.
- Dust often with a microfibre mop or vacuum cleaner.
- Mop with little water and the right product: too much product leaves a film that traps dirt.
- Put felt pads on furniture legs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most practical floor colour?
Mid tones, such as natural oak or mid greys and beiges, in a matt finish. They are the ones that contrast least with dust and stains.
Do dark floors hide dirt?
They hide dark stains, but not dust, footprints, hair or scratches, which show up light against the dark background.
Which floor hides dirt best in the kitchen?
A water-resistant vinyl or laminate in a mid tone, matt, with a wood or stone pattern. With tiles, use grey grout.
