Features of plasterboard

Functionality, versatility and comfort are the words that describe partition walls today: as well as dividing up a space, they now also provide acoustic and thermal insulation and fire resistance. All these features have turned partition walls into a major building element with the highest technical standards.

Plasterboard partitioning is an ideal solution for dividing and compartmentalising spaces, and its technical characteristics speed up installation, which is much cleaner than usual because it is dry construction. In decorative terms, it offers endless possibilities whatever your aesthetic needs.

Plasterboard ceilings: false ceilings and seamless ceilings

A plasterboard false ceiling is suspended from the structural slab on a framework of metal profiles, to which the gypsum boards are screwed. Once the joints have been filled and the ceiling painted, you get a smooth seamless ceiling with no visible joints. It can be used to lower the ceiling height, conceal services, integrate lighting or improve insulation.

We install them in homes and businesses, and they are especially useful in kitchens and bathrooms: there are fire-retardant or fire-resistant boards for kitchens and moisture-resistant boards for damp areas.

If you need frequent access to what is above the ceiling, a suspended ceiling is the better option; for mouldings and classic finishes, a plaster ceiling. For step-by-step installation, see our blog: how to install a plasterboard ceiling.

Plasterboard walls and partitions

Plasterboard walls are used to divide spaces or improve the insulation of a home, commercial premises or an office. A partition wall is built with metal studs as the support, gypsum boards and screws: it is lightweight, flexible and needs no bricks or mortar.

We choose the board according to the room:

  • Standard board: the most widely used in homes.
  • Green board (moisture-resistant): resists damp, for bathrooms.
  • Pink board (fire-resistant): for kitchens, fireplaces and meter rooms.
  • Blue board (acoustic): for soundproofing between rooms.

Frequently asked questions about plasterboard

Which plasterboard should be used in bathrooms and kitchens?

In bathrooms and damp areas, moisture-resistant board (the green one). In kitchens and next to fireplaces, fire-resistant board (the pink one). To separate rooms where noise is an issue, acoustic board (the blue one). Standard board is used in the rest of the home.

Seamless plasterboard ceiling or suspended ceiling?

A seamless ceiling is smooth, with no visible joints, and is painted like the rest of the house. If you need frequent access to services above the ceiling, a suspended ceiling with removable tiles is the better choice. For mouldings and classic finishes, take a look at our plaster ceilings.

Does installing plasterboard involve building work?

It is dry construction: gypsum boards screwed to a metal stud framework, with no bricks or mortar. It goes up quickly and is much cleaner than traditional partition walls.

Does plasterboard insulate against noise and heat?

Yes. With the right board, plasterboard walls and ceilings improve the acoustic and thermal insulation of homes and commercial premises. We will recommend the best solution depending on what you want to insulate against.
