Doors bring privacy, warmth and style to your home. What's more, depending on a door's features, you can change your layout, gain a few centimetres or improve the sound insulation of different rooms.
✅➤ Types of Wooden Doors by internal construction
The most important criteria that determine the quality of an interior door are: the outer finish, the internal construction and the frame material. In terms of internal construction, we can distinguish the following doors.
1️⃣ Solid Doors
These are doors whose structure is made of chipboard, solid wood or MDF, offering high strength and both sound and thermal insulation. They weigh around 40 kilos.
2️⃣ Hollow-Core Doors
The inside of the door is honeycomb cardboard with a 3mm MDF skin. They weigh close to 20 kilos and are the most affordable option. On the plus side, they are light, which helps the hinges last longer; on the downside, the insulation is of lower quality.
✅➤ Wooden Door Finishes for the outer surface
It is essential to pay attention to the outer finish of the door because, depending on what you choose, you will create very different atmospheres.
- Natural wood: Made with natural wood veneer, which may or may not be varnished.
- Wood effect: Made from medium-density fibreboard (MDF) covered with one or more layers of paper imitating natural wood.
- Lacquered: Made from MDF board to which several coats of lacquer are applied. It is important to mention here that the amount of lacquer is measured in grams per square metre and increases the door's durability. Depending on the grammage and the number of coats, the lacquer can be standard or plus.
✅➤ Wooden Doors by how they open
We can distinguish between:
1️⃣ Hinged
They open into the room and take up space. They can be single or double; glazed, solid or glass. Double doors are common in living and dining rooms. One of the sides can be fixed.
2️⃣ Sliding
Their main advantage is that they let you make the most of the space. They are especially suitable for small rooms, kitchens or bathrooms. They can be surface-mounted (sliding along the wall, with no building work needed) or pocket doors (sliding inside the wall).
Frame
A door's resistance to moisture depends on the material of the frame, which can be: MDF, moisture-resistant MDF or solid wood.
Door opening direction
It is essential to think about which way you want your door to open. This choice depends on any obstacles in the opening path, such as shelves or other doors that open at the same angle as the new one and, in general, any furniture that takes up space. The opening direction is determined from the side you push, so that the door opens into the room.
