It adds warmth, protects the wall and slightly improves thermal and acoustic insulation.
At Payresa we have been installing wall coverings, wooden floors and wall panelling in Malaga for more than 40 years, in both homes and commercial premises. In this guide we explain how to install wall panelling properly, and also when it makes sense to do it yourself and when it is best to call in a professional.
This article is based on our real on-site experience, not on theoretical advice.
What exactly is wall panelling and what is it for?
Wall panelling is a covering that clads all or part of a wall. Traditionally it is fitted to the lower part (half height), although nowadays it is also fitted floor to ceiling.
It can be made from:
- Natural wood
- MDF or engineered wood
- PVC
- Composite
- Ceramic
What wall panelling really does (beyond looks)
Although many people fit it for decoration, wall panelling serves some very practical purposes:
- It protects the wall from knocks and scuffs (hallways, children's rooms, offices).
- It slightly improves thermal insulation.
- It hides minor irregularities in the wall.
- It lets you refresh a room without having to skim and paint it all.
In older homes in Malaga, for example, we use it a lot to cover walls with small imperfections without major building work.
How to install wall panelling step by step
Below we explain the professional installation process.
1. Preparing the wall (the step hardly anyone gets right)
Before installing wall panelling, the wall must be:
- Dry
- Level (with no major bulges)
- Free of active damp
- Free of dust
⚠️ One of the most common mistakes we see is fitting wall panelling on damp walls.
This causes warping and boards separating within a few months.
If there is a skirting board, it must be removed before starting.
2. Fitting the battens (base frame)
Battens are wooden strips or profiles that support the boards.
How to fit them correctly
- Mark the exact height of the panelling with a laser level or a long spirit level.
- Fit three horizontal rows of battens:Top row (marks the finished height)
- Middle row
- Bottom row (1-2 cm from the floor)
They are fixed with plugs and screws approximately every 40–60 cm.
Important: orientation
- If the boards run vertically → the battens must run horizontally.
- If the boards run horizontally → the battens must run vertically.
This detail is key to stability.
Fitting the panelling boards
The boards are not screwed directly to the wall. They are fixed to the battens.
The correct process:
- Measure and cut each board to the required height.
- Check that the first board is perfectly vertical (use a level).
- Fit the following boards using the tongue-and-groove system.
- Fix with metal clips or fine concealed nails.
💡 Professional tip:
The first board must be perfectly aligned. If the first one is crooked, the whole panelling will be too.
Corners and trims: where a professional finish shows
Wall panelling may be well fitted, but if the trims are poorly finished, the result loses quality.
Elements you should fit:
- Internal and external corner pieces
- Top capping moulding
- Skirting board at the bottom
These profiles:
- Hide imperfect cuts
- Protect edges
- Improve the visual finish
In professional installations we always spend extra time on this stage.
Common mistakes when installing wall panelling (that we see at customers' homes)
After decades working in homes in Malaga, these are the most common mistakes:
- Not leaving an expansion gap.
- Not checking the wall for damp.
- Fixing directly without battens.
- Not using a level on the first board.
- Poorly finished cuts.
- Choosing the wrong material for damp areas.
Especially on the Costa del Sol, the humidity in the air can cause problems if a small expansion gap is not left.
Is it a good idea to install wall panelling yourself?
It depends on the case.
✅ You can do it yourself if:
- It is a small wall.
- There are no damp problems.
- You have some DIY experience.
⚠️ We recommend professional installation if:
- It is a commercial premises.
- There are electrical installations behind it.
- It is natural wood panelling.
- The wall has significant irregularities.
Poor installation can lead to gaps, vibrations or warping over time.
Which type of wall panelling to choose for each room
At Payresa we usually recommend:
- Bedrooms and living rooms → wood or MDF.
- Bathrooms and kitchens → PVC or moisture-resistant materials.
- Commercial premises → impact-resistant materials.
- Coastal areas with high humidity → engineered or vinyl materials.
Choosing the right material is as important as installing it correctly.
Wall panelling maintenance
Maintenance is simple:
- Clean with a slightly damp cloth.
- Avoid excess water.
- Do not use abrasive products.
- Check the joints from time to time.
Natural wood can be treated with oil or a protective treatment, depending on the finish.
