Materials needed to lay artificial grass on a terrace
Before we start our step-by-step installation guide, let's briefly go over all the materials you will need:
- A utility knife
- A ruler
- Self-adhesive joining tape or joining strip
- PU adhesive (only if we are going to use joining strips)
- Stiff-bristled brush
How to lay artificial grass on a terrace step by step
Prepare the surface
One of the great advantages of this type of artificial grass installation is that the floor needs no prior preparation.
All you need to do is sweep the surface to make sure there is no debris or stones left that could get in the way. If you decide to mop it as well, make sure it is completely dry before installation.
Measure the surface
Now it is time to measure the whole surface so that you know exactly how many rolls and metres of artificial grass you will need. Ideally, draw a plan and also mark any obstacles that will need to be cut around (such as columns, ledges, etc.).
Cut the artificial grass
Once we have the measurements, it is time to lay out the different rolls. Remember that, for a better fit, it is advisable to leave about 5 cm extra at the edges. Once it is installed, we will trim off the excess.
We also need to pay special attention to the joins between two rolls. We will trim about 0.5 cm from each side to get a clean edge.
Make sure all the pieces fit together perfectly, and bear in mind that they must all be laid in the same direction. That is the only way to get a uniform look, as the fibres must all point the same way.
Now that the different rolls are in their final position, it is time to seal them!
Fix the artificial grass
This is one of the key stages in knowing how to lay artificial grass on a terrace.
As we mentioned in the materials section, you can choose to install it with self-adhesive joining tape or with a joining strip.
Self-adhesive joining tape is probably the simplest method:
- Lift one edge of the roll.
- Place the self-adhesive tape.
- Remove the paper strip covering the adhesive.
- Lay the edge of the grass back over it and press lightly.
- Repeat this process with each of the edges.
If, on the other hand, you opt for the joining strip, follow these steps:
- Lift one edge of the roll.
- Place the joining strip on the floor.
- Using a spatula, spread the PU adhesive over it.
- Lay the edge of the grass back down and press lightly to fix it.
- Repeat the process with each of the edges.
- Leave it to dry. Depending on the ambient temperature, this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Infill and brush
And finally… the finishing touch! If you want a softer, springier result, you can spread silica sand over the surface. This will also help it stay in place and keep the fibres upright.
Once this is done, use the stiff-bristled brush to comb the grass against the direction of the fibres so that they stay upright.
